Modeling the Choice Continuum: an Integrated Model of Residential Location, Auto Ownership, Bicycle Ownership, and Commute Tour Mode Choice Decisions

چکیده
The integrated modeling of land use and transportation involves analyzing the entire choice continuum defining people’s lifestyles across temporal scales. This includes long term choices such as residential and work location choices, medium term choices such as vehicle and bicycle ownership, and short term choices such as mode choice and trip departure time choice. In recent times, there has been increasing interest in modeling these choice dimensions simultaneously to account for endogeneity of longer term location choices, residential self-selection effects, and simultaneity of choice processes that define a person’s lifestyle. This paper presents an integrated simultaneous multi-dimensional choice model of residential location, vehicle ownership, bicycle ownership, and commute tour mode. The model system is formulated and estimated on a data set from the San Francisco Bay Area in the United States. Model estimation results show that it is possible to link long term, medium term, and short term choices in a multidimensional simultaneous equations model that captures endogeneity and unobserved heterogeneity.

This paper offers an econometric model system that simultaneously considers six different activity-travel choice dimensions in a unifying framework. The six dimensions include residential location choice, work location choice, auto ownership, commuting distance, commute mode, and number of stops on commute tours. The paper presents the modeling methodology in detail as well as estimation result...
متن کاملA Joint Model of Residential Neighborhood Type Choice and Bicycle Ownership: Accounting for Self-selection and Unobserved Heterogeneity
This paper presents a joint model of residential neighborhood type choice and bicycle ownership. The objective is to isolate the true causal effects of the neighborhood attributes on household bicycle ownership from spurious association due to residential self-selection effects. The joint model accounts for residential self-selection due to both observed socio-demographic characteristics and un...
متن کاملTrip pattern of low-density residential area in semi urban industrial cluster: predictive modeling
This research elucidates the trip pattern of the low-density residential zone in a semi-urban industrial cluster of southwestern Nigeria. These sets of dwellers are often times neglected in the transportation planning process with the view that it is not a residential zone. Domiciliary information gathering procedure was employed in the analysis with 0.82 return rates. It was backed up with the...

Residential location choice modeling is one of the areas in transportation planning that attempts to examine households location search behavior incorporating their trade-offs between housing quality, prices or rents, distance to work and other key factors. This brings up the need to come up with methods to logically allocate credible choice alternatives for individuals. This article attempts to...
